How Much Is That Hidden Water Leak Costing You?
A small, unnoticed leak can waste hundreds or even thousands of litres of water. Find out how much a hidden leak could be adding to your water bill.
Estimate your potential water costs using your leak rate, how long it has been running, and your local water and wastewater rates.
Estimates are for general information only. Actual costs depend on your utility's rates, billing structure, and the amount of water used.
What could a hidden leak cost you?
- A running toilet that never fully shuts off
- A dripping faucet or leaking pipe
- A hidden leak behind a wall or under a floor
- Water wasted while you're away from home
- Unexpected water and wastewater charges

Assumptions and limits
This tool gives an estimate for general guidance only. Your actual bill depends on your utility's current rates, billing period and meter readings. It does not replace an on-site leak investigation by a licensed plumber.
How this estimate works
Water wasted per day = leak rate in litres per minute × 60 minutes × 24 hours. The 30-day and yearly figures multiply the daily amount by 30 and 365. One cubic metre (m³) is 1,000 litres, the unit your water bill uses.
The extra cost is the difference between your bill with the leak and your bill without it, using the same normal household usage for both. This matters where a utility charges a higher price once usage passes a set amount in a billing period: the leak is priced at whichever block it pushes you into.
Water and wastewater (sewer) consumption charges are calculated separately, using each utility's own billing rule. For example, Peel Region bills residential wastewater on 85% of water used. If your home is on a private septic system, wastewater is left out.
Fixed charges, such as monthly service or meter charges, stay the same whether or not you have a leak, so they are not included in the leak cost. Taxes, late-payment rates and stormwater fees are not included either.
Rates are stored in the plugin, not looked up live. Each municipality is labelled Verified (checked against the official source), Needs review (official rates, with a detail still to confirm) or Manual entry required (enter the rates from your bill).

Water Leak FAQs
How do I check if I have a hidden water leak?
Turn off every tap and water-using appliance, then read your water meter. Wait at least 30 minutes without using any water and read it again. If the reading has gone up, water is flowing somewhere, which usually points to a leak.
How can I tell if my toilet is leaking?
Listen for the tank refilling when nobody has flushed, and watch for water trickling into the bowl. A common home check is to add a few drops of food colouring to the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. Colour showing up in the bowl means water is leaking past the flapper.
Why doesn't the calculator include my monthly service charge?
Fixed service, meter and basic charges are the same whether or not you have a leak. Only consumption charges, which are billed per cubic metre, go up when water is wasted, so only those are counted.
Will a leak increase my sewer charges too?
Usually, yes. Most Ontario utilities bill wastewater based on metered water use, even if the leaked water never reaches the sewer. Some bill wastewater on a share of water use, such as Peel Region at 85%. Homes on private septic systems are not billed for municipal wastewater.
Why might my actual bill be different from this estimate?
Bills depend on meter readings, billing period length, estimated reads, rate changes during the period and charges this tool leaves out, such as fixed and stormwater charges. Where your utility uses price blocks, your actual usage also changes the result. Treat the number as an estimate.
My municipality isn't listed or says "Manual entry required". What do I do?
Choose the option to enter your own rates and type in the water and wastewater consumption rates from your latest bill, in dollars per cubic metre. The calculator never substitutes a neighbouring community's rates.
When should I call a plumber about a leak?
Call right away if water is spraying, pooling, coming through a ceiling or wall, or if you can't find the source of unexplained water loss. Hidden leaks can damage drywall, flooring and foundations long before they show up on a bill.
