The Birnie Story
100+ years of Hamilton's most trusted name in plumbing & drains
J. Birnie starts it all from 129 Campbell Ave, Hamilton — a sewer & cement contractor with a sleek panel van and a smile. The business is born.
Thos. R. Birnie modernizes the business into electric sewer cleaning out of 40 Grosvenor St. New era, new name, same dedication.
The sons join the business. "Sewer Trouble? Don't Dig… Call" becomes a Hamilton icon. Radio dispatched across the city.
The three brothers put their faces on every truck. The phone number becomes the brand — (905) 5-STINKY. "It's a stinky business & we love it!"
The fleet grows, the brand sharpens. Now Sewer Plumbing & Water Experts. A toll-free number, a wider reach across the region.
A century-old legacy rebranded for the next generation. 5-star residential service, a full modern fleet, and birnie.pro. "We'll make it flow."
Hamilton's Most Trusted Plumbing and Drain Company Since 1922
For over a century, one name has kept Hamilton's homes, businesses, and streets flowing. Birnie Plumbing and Drains is not just a plumbing company. It is a Hamilton institution, built by three generations of a family who showed up, did the work, and earned the trust of this city one drain at a time.
Where It All Started: J. Birnie, 1922
Hamilton was a growing city in the early 1920s. Neighbourhoods were expanding, infrastructure was being laid, and tradespeople who showed up with skill and integrity were worth their weight in gold.
J. Birnie was one of those tradespeople.
Operating out of 110 Campbell Avenue, J. Birnie established himself as a sewer and cement contractor at a time when that work was the backbone of building a livable city. He drove his panel van through Hamilton's streets with a simple promise: do the job right, treat people fairly, and stand behind your work.
That promise became the foundation of everything that followed.
The Second Generation: Thos. R. Birnie, 1960s
Decades later, Thomas R. Birnie carried his father's work ethic into a new era. Based out of 40 Grosvenor Street, Thos. R. Birnie expanded the business into electric sewer cleaning, adopting new technology to solve the same old problem Hamilton homeowners had always faced: blocked drains that would not wait.
The business grew. The name spread. And the phone number became something Hamilton residents actually remembered, because when you called, someone answered, and when someone came, the job got done.
This was not accidental. It was the result of a family that understood that reputation is everything in the trades, and that every service call is either a deposit into that reputation or a withdrawal from it.
The Birnies kept depositing.
The Sons Join In: Thos. R. Birnie and Sons Ltd.
By the time the third generation came of age, the business was ready to grow again. Thos. R. Birnie and Sons Ltd. was born, and with it came a bold personality that Hamilton could not ignore.
The trucks became rolling billboards. The tagline "Old Kids In The Blockage" showed up on box trucks all over the city. Radio dispatched crews were on call and ready. The message was direct: sewer trouble, do not dig, call.
It was honest, unpretentious marketing from a family that had nothing to prove and everything to offer. Hamilton noticed. Contractors, property managers, and homeowners alike started calling not just when something went wrong, but because they wanted the company they could count on.
The Stinky Era: How a Yellow Pages Mistake Became Hamilton's Most Recognizable Brand
In December of 1999, owners Bob and Roy Birnie made a devastating discovery. Their family's company had been accidentally left out of the Yellow Pages for the 1999 to 2000 book. At the time, the Yellow Pages was the primary source of marketing for most local businesses, and with their father Thos. R. Birnie in his 80s, much of the community assumed the company had quietly closed its doors.
It had not. But the phone stopped ringing like it used to. By January of 2000, call volume had dropped by 50 percent. A business with 15 employees was suddenly fighting for its life through no fault of its own.
Bob and Roy refused to fold. With support from local television stations including CHCH, who ran their ads during prime time at very reasonable rates out of goodwill for a longstanding Hamilton business, the Birnies kept their name in front of the city. But they knew they needed something bigger. Something unforgettable. Something that no Hamilton homeowner would ever need to look up.
The business was already using the slogan "it's a stinky business and we love it." It was Bob's wife Judy who had the idea: put STINKY directly into the phone number. Bob and Roy worked out the letters to digits, added the 5 prefix required for their area, and created a phone number that wrote itself into Hamilton's memory whether the city wanted it to or not.
(905) 5-STINKY. Born out of a crisis. Built into a legend.
That line was not just a joke. It was the most honest piece of advertising in the plumbing industry. The Birnie brothers were not embarrassed by what they did. They were proud of it, because they understood something most people only figure out at 10pm on a Sunday with a backed-up drain: the person who shows up, rolls up their sleeves, and fixes the problem is not just a plumber. They are a lifesaver. And they deserve a memorable phone number.
In 2001, the Birnies returned to the Yellow Pages with their new number. In 2002, they became the first company ever to advertise on the spine of the book. The trucks rolled, the heads turned, and the laughs followed. "Our brand outdid our name," said Rob Birnie. He was not wrong.
The 5-STINKY brand turned heads, earned laughs, and built genuine loyalty across Hamilton and the surrounding region. What started as a survival strategy became the defining chapter of a century-old company. It worked because it was real. And because nobody forgets a number like that.
Sewer Plumbing and Water Experts: Expanding Across the Region
As the business grew, so did its capabilities. Thos. R. Birnie and Sons Ltd. expanded its service offerings to include full sewer plumbing and water expertise, adding a toll-free number and growing a fleet that could serve clients across Hamilton and beyond.
Property managers started calling for regular maintenance contracts. Commercial clients trusted Birnie for the kind of complex sewer and drain work that lesser operations could not handle. New residents to Hamilton quickly learned what long-time locals already knew: when you need it done right, you call Birnie.
Birnie Plumbing and Drains: Built for the Next 100 Years
Today, Birnie Plumbing and Drains operates as one of Hamilton's most respected full-service plumbing and drain companies, carrying the Est. 1922 legacy into a modern era with a modern fleet, trained technicians, and a 5-star residential service commitment.
The rebrand brought a fresh face to a storied name, but nothing underneath changed. The same dedication. The same accountability. The same family standard that J. Birnie set on Campbell Avenue over a century ago.
